Wearable Flora: Inside the Erstwilder x Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria Collection
A landmark partnership between two Melbourne institutions with a shared love for the natural world, and a collection that asks you to wear that love on your lapel.
Where It Comes From
Designed by Erstwilder's own Creative Lead, Hannah Buzgau, this collection takes its cues directly from the living world of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. Every plant, flower and fungi represented in the range is native to Victoria. Every bird depicted can actually be spotted in the Melbourne Gardens. This isn't decorative botanicals — it's a specific, lovingly documented portrait of one of Victoria's most treasured places.
From the golden pom-pom clusters of the Sunshine Wattle to the electric blue of the Superb Fairy Wren, the collection reads like a walk through the Gardens on a perfect spring afternoon. And the scene brooches — a picnic spread out with the Melbourne skyline visible through the trees, a couple punting gently across the lake — capture the particular magic of the Gardens as a place people actually live in, not just visit.
The Pieces
The range spans 34 designs across full-size enamel brooches, drop earrings, a necklace, hair clips and a new line of simplified mini brooches — making it one of Erstwilder's most expansive collections to date.
The full-size brooches are the heart of it. Botanicals like the Blue Pincushion, Mountain Banksia, Long-flower Mistletoe, Pink Mulla Mulla and Mānuka are rendered in Erstwilder's signature layered resin with extraordinary textural detail. The bird brooches — Musk Lorikeet, Eastern Rosella, Pacific Black Duck, Little Corella, Superb Fairy Wren — are just as carefully observed. The Musk Lorikeet in particular sits on a branch of twining glycine, exactly as you might find it in the Gardens.
Two scene brooches complete the picture: A Royal Garden Picnic, with the Melbourne skyline peeking through the trees, and Love on Lake Punting, capturing the dreamy experience of gliding across the lake in the warmer months. (If you haven't taken a lake tour at the Melbourne Gardens yet, consider this collection your nudge.)
The Garden in Full Bloom Necklace pairs a Spotted Sun-Orchid with a star-shaped native bloom on a 38cm chain with a 9cm extender — a considered, wearable composition that works as well dressed down as dressed up.
Something New: Mini Brooches and Hair Clips
The collection introduces two entirely new formats for Erstwilder. The Simplified Mini Brooches — featuring the Cut-leaf Daisy and Chocolate Lily — bring the botanical detail of the full range into a smaller, more layerable silhouette. Perfect for a first-time collector, or for anyone who wants to quietly add a wildflower to their everyday outfit.
The hair clips are a genuine reinvention. Responding to years of community feedback, Erstwilder has developed a lighter, more wearable and more affordable hair accessory in six botanical designs: Cut-leaf Daisy, Chocolate Lily, Spotted Sun Orchid and Assorted Flowers — available in coordinating pairs and as individual statement clips. They're beautifully wearable, and they come in the collection's signature round collector's tin.
A Purchase That Gives Back
Every purchase from the Erstwilder x Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria collection supports the Gardens' ongoing horticultural, conservation, scientific and educational work — which makes wearing one feel even better. The collection also references the National Herbarium of Victoria, located within the Melbourne Gardens, which holds over 1.562 million dried plant, algae and fungi specimens. The Herbarium Bundle Brooch and Native Mushroom Medley Brooch are quiet, beautiful nods to that extraordinary living archive.
The Details
Each piece is packaged in the collection's special round collector's tin, featuring the Erstwilder x Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria branding with native florals printed around the side. Orders placed direct through Erstwilder come with a collectible botanical postcard featuring original illustrations of the flowers from the range.
